Nicolaus Mills: What might have happened if New Netherlands' elite families had never become involved with slavery or the slave trade? He says it's low to think there would have been much of the expansion that we see in the 18th century. Mills: I often wonder whether the connections that were maintained from the Southern colonies, the Caribbean colonies, networks of surveillance acted out on a kind of broader scale than they did.
