The battle of Britain cemented fighter command's place in the public imagination. The missions that it undertook could be very monotonous and there were people who did their full operational tour without ever sinking a German U-boat or a German ship. It was partly that it didn't have the glamour of fighter command and the intensity of bomber command but that doesn't mean its work was vital.
