The History of Homosexuality in Sparta
Young Spartan men completed their training at the age of 20, and thus were permitted to start growing their hair long. Those with such success that they were marked out as potential future leaders would be given the opportunity to test their skills through participation in the secret police. Only those Spartans who had served in the cryptia as young men could expect to achieve the highest ranks in Spartan society and army.
