Women and Crime

CHAPTER

The Effects of Labeling on Learning

In second grade, Toya was kicked out of that gifted program for disrupting class and for disrespecting her teacher. When she returned to regular classes, she felt judged and even more removed from everyone as she had felt before. Instead of turning her life around, she started hanging out with kids who did far worse things than she had ever done. She gets arrested for assault after getting to a fight with one of her friends and mothers. Her parents enrolled her in an alternative school; this experience did the opposite of what its intent was.
