The History of Bronze Casting
Bronze casting was highly important in the history of Greek sculpture, since it allowed sculptors to show a much wider range of subjects. Creating these bronze statues required a particularly well-equipped workshop with furnaces, tools and foundry workers skilled in metallurgy. A red figure killix, known as the Foundry Cup, dating to around 490-480 BC, is now housed at the Altus Museum in Berlin. The workers are shown nude, not because they actually worked in the nude, but because it emphasizes sweat in the intense heat.
