Free Trade Unionism was really prominent throughout the cold war. It's basically a euphemism for just anti-communism, but they just would say free. The irony there is that a lot of what the so-called Free Trade Unionists were doing working with the CIA and U.S. State Department to make sure communists had no voice or influence within labor movements. In Brazil, under President Goulard, Washington wanted him gone as soon as he came into office because they thought he was too tolerant, permissive towards communists.
