The Soviet war crimes in Afghanistan can be separated into a handful of distinct types. The 40th Army decided to depopulate the countryside and deprive the Mujahideen of its civilian support networks. They deliberately and methodically unleashed an ungodly amount of firepower on the rural population. One villager recalled a time when an artillery shell had burst near his house, hit my son Jamal in the back and came out the other side. He just sank to his knees and died.
