In many ways, Joshua is not about the evil other that lurks out there. The book was doing something else and how it's telling that story. And really, when we get to the end of the book, what it's worried about is the ongoing presence of idolatry within Israel and lurking around them in some ways too. To the extent that we situate all threats and dangers out there, we're probably not doing enough self-examination.
