First waves of immigrants brought the English language to North America. Many local dialect features from England were lost as people mixed and mingled in the New World. Differences not only emerged between regions, they also emerged between classes. Elicution classes in both England and upper class schools in the US taught the non-rotic accent. That was considered to be the proper way to speak in those communities.
