The ECB has announced a CBDC project, which is at best useless in the face of cryptocurrencies and other stable coins. There are some fears there that CBDCs become a Chinese-like social scoring system or become integrated in a very pervasive system of surveillance. The IMF have argued for central banks to take these non-bank decentralized issuers, like e-money companies, and give them full access to central bank facilities.
