So the apes, or monkeys, are described as largely like mindless. They just almost cannot comprehend that each other. Then a monolith literally drifts down from space. And it's kind of like, I don't know, 10 feet tall. It starts like doing things to them. It did things to them and then made them do things. Sort of like made them use tools.
