The dragon and the young girl contrive together to overthrow the kind of sex stereotype of the saint george's story. They don't need any rescuing, they don't need to be antagonistic, just be friends. And that tradition of the domesticated dragon exists, i think, as a dominant theme in modern fantasy literature. Even those stories which are much more horific than these children's stories, are none the less indebted to them somewhat.
