Steiner was offended by the idea that Jewish people considered themselves Jews as well as Germans. He thought that represented a fundamental conflict of interest and made it impossible for Jewish people to truly be loyal to Germany. In 1890 Steiner wrote an article on stylistic corruption in the press in which he blamed Jewish journalists for using quote Jewish vernacular idioms mocking the German language.
