Eric: I found a really cool blog post by Andrew heiss on building fancy road trip maps. It's pretty incredible utilization of GG plot that I would check out if you're a date of his fan and then one cool package that I was not familiar with so there's the open street maps package which allows you to do things like geocoding and reverse geocoding as well.
