Joseph Smith's Letters to Potential Presidential Candidates

Joseph Smith and other Church leaders renewed their efforts to petition federal authorities for redress. Three of the five candidates replied with what can only be described as terse noncommittal responses. Henry Clay responded that while he sympathized with the Latter-day Saints' sufferings under injustice, he could quote: "...entering to know engagements, make no promises"
