Why Is There No Power?

During winter there's not as much solar power coming in. So the power will go out for mum's birthday say. And some emergency beacons will come on, which to me is crazy. We'd rather just be playing Xbox with the full heating on. The best I can do when people ask why is there no power here is I'm a family member.
