Sometimes people will pick up a book of Zen stories and they'll understand a good deal of though, like the slapstick humor. There's a famous saying by Zen master Lindsey, where he says, well, if you meet the Buddha on the road, you should kill him, cut off his head, right? That might sound like a crud to some medieval peasant in China who is not predestined or predisposed for them. But what he's conveying is an esoteric teaching that can't be conveyed simply by studying it by rote.
