Epicurus's universe is an inconceivably large void, which lasts for infinite time. It has infinitely many atoms moving and colliding within it, forming bodies and cosmic systems scattered through unending emptiness. The way Epicurus anticipates and responds to such objections shows how he is using sense experience to build his theory. He not only takes sensation as his starting point, but also uses sensation to check his theory.
