Charlemagne and the German Empire

Charlemagne built a vision of how the glories of the Roman Empire could be recreated through a deal between king and pope. In 800 he was crowned as the Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III in Rome. The idea of a private German church was not established yet so his empire was divided within 30 years of his death.
