The world was a much smaller place than it had been during the han. A lot could happen in 400 years, especially in a place like china. By their time, and sixth, early seventh century, they knew all about rome - or thought they did. We know of swe yanti's yearning to reach out to r Rome from the primary source that all historians have hung their hats on. But there were also many other unknown chang chens who travelled far and wide, but perhaps didn't have any literary aspirations or yearning for immortality. They left no record of where they had travelled and what they had seen or heard which might have profoundly affected our understanding of those times
