Stanford professor Justin Berg studied pop music for his new paper. He found that 93% of artists never had a single hit, but 7% were one-hit wonders. Those who reached their initial hits with more creative, mean more novel or more varied portfolios, were more likely to keep generating hits. The difference may lie in what's called path dependence.
