The directory stack is a way to reduce your typing significantly when you are working in a collection of directories that you use frequently. The command push d p u s h d is a substitute for cd that sayscd where I want to go but also push a directory onto a stack. It's last in first out and you can keep pushing directories onto the stack piling them up and then popping them off to go back where you were.
