You want to polarize, you don't want to be vanilla. A lot of it's in the head. I'd always challenge people and say, think about what's the worst case scenario? Someone doesn't like your comment. But well, it's not a complete waste of time, but I would say it's not worth doing. And as you, as you found out from experience, it doesn't feel good either.
