China and India in the Indian Ocean

The Indian Ocean is viewed by New Delhi as its own backyard and that New Delhi should have control of this region. In China's case, it really started after about 2008 when they sent initial counter-piracy mission to the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Somalia. And since then, you've seen effectively a permanent Chinese presence established their first overseas military base officially was opened in Djibouti in 2017. Now India has in some ways natural advantages of geography. It is a sort of resident power in the Indian Ocean,. It has assets in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, just off west of the streets of Malacca, where there is a sizable naval presence.
