The most primitive reaction and most widespread reactions to the idea of artificial consciousness is always, but they will never feel anything. That's a widespread intuition, and of course, there's no good argument for this in any way. It could be the case that there is something about having, about breathing and digesting that we haven't fully understood yet. We might find out in the course of scientific progress that only those systems that actually have a metabolism can realize their relevant causal properties which need to be realized for consciousness or high level intelligence.
