Hagfish slime doesn't bind to water at all right it essentially creates channels that are really narrow that work on the surface tension of water to trap it and slow its flow. A lot of hagfish have what's called an air bladder which actually fills with air to provide buoyancy for them so they can fill it and empty it to adjust how you know where they are in the water column. We don't know about their relationship to each other but they seem to like to be together in congregations.
