You need to be aware of what that particular company is looking for when you know considering hoping to work for them. Most art directors will, they can sort of see talent even if you don't have something exactly like what they're wanting. If your work is too far out there then you're just not going to get hired which is why freelance you tend to have quite a few styles that you can work within so you can work for several different companies basically.
