The Levites Are the Chief Teachers of the People

The first born needs to be seen as a transitional figure at the moment crisis where moses needed some part of the nation to stand on his side. Who had stood up? Not the first born more generally, but the levites. Through their actions, they marked themselves out as those most fitting for the spiritual task of the first born. From that point on, they would be the chief teachers of the people. The tabernacle stands at the centre, where the lord is enthroned above the cherubim.
