Is There a Russian Dimension to Zionist Jewish Identity?
Russia and the former Soviet Union was the only place in the world where to be a Jew meant to belong to Jewish nationality, rather than a confession. This was very important for the entire Zionist project, is to identify Jews not as a confessional group but as an ethnic or national group. So I think that the whole idea of Zionist Jewish identity is essentially Russian.
