Kanban recommends having a special case lay on the boards for that which told expedite. The rule is that if you expedite everything, then it's not expedite anymore. That's how we manage using the Kanban space to specialize in specialized lanes with very strict working progress limits applied to them. We inspect metrics, we use blockers and make sure that work items continuously flow through the works.
