Bentham thought there were dimensions of pleasure, and actually much of these we can see. He meant pleasure in the absence of pain, and he had a calculus for how he'd come up with it. And so he could work it out on his calculator. Although it wasn't yet called science, it wasn't called science until the year that Bentham died in 1832.
