Concussions and the NFL
In 2002, former Pittsburgh stealer Mike Webster died and was diagnosed at autopsy with chronic traumatic encephalopathy. The focus on concussions pushed the league to implement over 50 rule changes since 2002. But an independent study from 2020 still concluded the new rules as well-intentioned as they may be have proven to be too weak to make the NFL game demonstrably safer.
