What Do I Believe When I Code as Code?

There's a belief system that data from the past is sufficiently representative and stable to represent the sufficiently unperturbed future close in. That belief system is not true. It's invalid. You can code as code, but it's doable. The really hard part is challenging what you have to believe in order to use that tool, that approach, that data.
