A Poem About Love and the Blood of Christ
During the reformation, there was a big conversation about what god meant in christ when he said this is my body and this is my blood. The theologians tied themselves absolutely into knots as to how the god could be there with you when you receive your communion. Poet george herbert instead of getting into sides on the controversy, just quietly writes a little poem called 'the agony' He says that love is that liquor, sweet and most divine, which my god feels as blood, but i as wine. It's just that's poetry doing something that the theologi had proved itself incapable of doing - uttering a truth to which different controversialists could assent.
