The Great Society: A Transition to Helping People Catch Up
The vision was that some people who couldn't help themselves would be captured by the social safety net, and everyone else would kind of magically be able to do very well. The Great Society didn't foresee a whole lot; it didn't see inflationary era of the late 60s and 70s which wiped out a lot of salary growth and wealth. And conservatives, they blame the great society for all the world's ills, but they don't look at all at the ways in which the private sector sort of aggregated the social contract That social contract is no longer necessarily adequate to the economy we have now., he says.
