Paleoecologist managed to get hold of some permafrost soil from an archaeological dig site. The prevailing wisdom said that DNA should have been too riddled with base pair errors to say anything of value about the past. But when Willerslev analyzed the sample, he was amazed to be able to pull out the DNA of ancient mammoths, bison, horses, and a variety of plants.
