The Metabolic Theory of Sex
The metabolic theory of sex predominated for a few decades from around when it was introduced in 1889 or so until the 1920s. This fed into the concept that during times of scarcity, more males would be produced while during times of plenty, more females would be. And that actually is, at least in part, what seems to happen in some species, I think insect species, not what happens in humans necessarily as far as I think we have learned at this point in 2022.
