The discipline of desire involves bringing our human will into agreement with cosmic nature. We live every present moment desiring and loving what actually happens, rather than what we want to happen. Epictetus points to his predecessors in the stoa when he taught his students that there is a god and a god who exercises providential care for the cosmos. The discipline of desire will enable us to move beyond that character of the stoic grins and bears the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.
This podcast episode provides a new theoretical foundation for my previous blog post on The Discipline of Desire, which is being completely updated. Make sure to come back for the next episode where the spiritual exercise of the Discipline of Desire will build upon the theory of this episode.
