Leather was everything, wasn't it? Leather for belts, leather for ten s, leather for saddles, leather to cover sword scabbards. Both the gladius and the pugio widend quite quickly away from the tip. And their sind to cause massive hemorrhaging. A couple of inches is all that's required. Once again, bone ivory or wood was sandwiched in between to give you a nice, thick hand to hold on to.
