Last year, in Burkina Faso alone, that conflict claimed 4,200 lives. And just the first three and a half months of this year, it's already taken about 3,000 more lives. These are jihadists that have local grievances but are also affiliated to Islamic State or al-Qaeda. West has been trying to help with development aid and troops on the ground; those efforts have had very little success.

Florida’s governor has made a headline-grabbing rightward lurch as part of a presumed bid for the White House. But both Mr DeSantis’s critics and his donors are starting to think he has overplayed his hand. Our correspondent finds that jihadist violence has, as was long feared, come to Burkina Faso. And rural America’s love affair with Japan’s tiny Kei trucks.
