The History of the Elephant Corps

Elephants and elephant warriors, called mahauts, made up an organized unit alongside the infantry and cavalry in a king's army. Outside of battle settings, the elephant corps was managed within the military bureaucracy. In addition to their trained warrior riders, they also had their own elephant doctors, who insured that the creatures were kept healthy. Poor treatment, defined as dirty stalls, poor food rations, poor bedding, beating and endangering the elephants, was punishable by fines.
