The Bible and Jones' Crusade for Socialism

Jones called Christianity a flyaway religion and labeled the Bible a tool used to oppress. He denounced the sky God in one sermon, saying: "Nobody's going to come out of the sky" In 1973, eight college students left People's Temple as they felt their families would fight them if they did. They complained that temple staff had become more concerned with castrating members than advancing socialist movement.
