The Sonic paper is split into two components. There's the component where they describe a snark that's universal, but it requires an untrusted third party helper who has a lot of computational resources to help make the proof. And then there's the part where you don't need that untr trusted third party, but the Prover is extremely slow. The idea was... It showed something. It showed you could do this universal trusted setup, but it didn't necessarily like hadn't figured out the sweet spot. But it showed to Nick Square, it showed hey, this is possible.
