The authorial intent and the audience's interpretation with theme is really tricky because you kind of have to balance those things. One of the great things about theme is that you can use it as like an intentional dialectic where you connect them maybe you even tell the audience how you see the connection. Some of the best explorations of theme happen on both sides of that fence they kind of give you both viewpoints.
