Magellan stripped Cartagena of his captaincy and his power. Quezada and Mendoza convinced Magellan to place Cartagena in their custody. Life on a ship was a pretty miserable existence, and a long voyage across the ocean was no picnic. For Magellan and his crew, it was a chance to escape months aboard the cramped ships. The locals took the fleet as a sign of good luck, and welcomed them with open arms.
