Is India a Light State?
There is something in a sense about the sociology of modernity, not anything particular to India, right? There will always be this dialectic of the state wanting to create a particular form of order and society resisting it. I think from a democratic point of view, and from the point of view of the delivery of certain kinds of services, I can agree with it. But frankly, there's no straightforward story. It actually turns out the authoritarian states were far better than decentralized democratic states.
