GPT J was developed to make it easier for researchers and alignment researchers to experiment with these models. We estimate that 90% of people did not have access to even the GPT three. So our goal is that basically that there's this large upfront cost in training them, but actually working with them is much cheaper. And so this was a way for us to help make this possible for more actors, for more academics to do this kind of work.
