Stalin just changed the way everyone in Russia had farmed for the last couple of thousand years. And it was not just that he was forcing everyone onto these farms, he was also changing the way that they farmed. The famine continues after the point where any kind of resistance is really broken to the fact that it starts to become a problem for the Soviet state.
