As people get better at a task like chess, they actually search less. That's part of the intelligence. They recognize areas of the bord that they don't even need to look at. It reminds me of how the a alphago programme works. A alpha go has two parts. The generator is itself a a deep neural net and it will generate what it considers the best moves first.
