Marx talked about the commodity as something which satisfies a human need. He lived in a world where he was perfectly well aware that a huge section of the working class were, um, service workers in the sense of like servants. The market will very happily sell you the palliative or the anodyne that will make you feel better about your body and it's always done that. I mean, you only have to look at diet culture, which is an attempt to sell people that which will make them feel better about their bodies.
